Long live the queen: Elizabeth II turns 80

LONDON -- As Britain's longest-reigning monarch since Queen Victoria, she is a symbol of continuity in a country buffeted by World War II, the end of its empire and the wrenching economic changes that followed.

Her power lies in having no power -- just her personality, tact and common touch.

As Queen Elizabeth II turns 80 today, her children's painful divorces are behind her and she shows no letup in her full schedule, nor any intention to retire.

Her ceremonial birthday is celebrated nationally in late June, so today's affair will be modest -- birthday wishes from the people of the town ...
