Remembering the Tarawa campaign

For months, even years afterward, I would occasionally see a certificate on the wall of someone's home, or in a store, or, once, glued to the back window of a car.

It was a simple piece of paper certifying that the holder had been a member of the Tarawa Honor Guard.

That may not mean much to many of you, but in the summer of 1988, when Long Beach was coincidentally celebrating the 100th anniversary of the city's incorporation, the Honor Guard played a significant role in remembering the battle of Tarawa and the Americans who died fighting it.
