Opposition Labor, Socialists big winners in Dutch local elections

BRUSSELS, March 8 (Xinhua) -- The Dutch opposition Labor Party (PvdA) and the Socialist Party (SP) were the biggest winners in Tuesday's local elections, Dutch news agency ANP reported on Wednesday.

The PvdA won 1,988 seats, 670 more than its disastrous showing in the 2002 municipal elections. This puts Labor ahead of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende's Christian Democrats (CDA) as the party with the most councillors in the country, the ANP said.

The Socialist Party (SP) also had reason to celebrate as it more than doubled ...
