Cycads are being targeted by rare-plant thieves
|
The thieves struck at night, knew what they were after and worked
fast.
In minutes, they ripped two plants from a lavishly landscaped home
in Costa Mesa, ditching their tools and fleeing when the homeowner
woke up and turned on a porch light.
Total haul: $3,500.
It could have been worse.
The thieves were after cycads, palmlike plants so prized that a
rare specimen can fetch $20,000 or more on the international black
market. Given more time to dig, their heist could have yielded a much
greater bounty.
