YOSEMITE * R26hose who saw the first recorded image must have
thought it was as foreign as the moon or as ethereal as a slice of
heaven.
Yosemite was little more than a myth to most Americans in 1855,
when a lithograph by Thomas Ayres captured a tremendous three-tiered
waterfall cascading from sheer cliffs, surrounded by an endless,
mysterious wilderness.
But within 50 years, the national park had become a hot spot for
tourists, a trend that grew so much that within a century of its
"discovery," Yosemite was becoming overcrowded and despoiled by an
endless stream of visitors.
