What would Hammurabi do?
The chief justice of Alabama's Supreme Court is being sued for
installing a 5,300-pound monument to the Ten Commandments on the
courthouse lawn.
The complainants say the monument impermissibly mixed religion and
government. Some proponents argue, whether sincerely or
disingenuously, that religious values aside,the Commandments are
worthy of display as a sort of legal and historical artifact.
But of course the Commandments arereligious, and the translations
and even the way they are numbered are associated with particular
