Stethoscope's practicality grows fainter High-tech ultrasound taking over, but doc loses bond to patient

The most enduring symbol of the art of medicine is the stethoscope
around your doctor's neck.
It takes a trained ear to interpret sounds that can signal a
faulty heart, a diseased lung or a blocked intestine. And with the
laying on of hands, the stethoscope creates a physical bond between
doctor and patient.
But a raft of studies has found an alarming decline in doctors'
stethoscope skills. The most recent evidence comes from the
University of Chicago, where a study of fourth-year medical students
found that students using stethoscopes reported accurate findings
only 33 percent of the time.
