Farmers involved in a free sub-soiling trial in Devon are due to enjoy a pounds100 per acre boost to the value of their maize crops, according to initial test results.

In an attempt to overcome the increasing problem of soil compaction from intensive maize growing, the Catchment Sensitive Farming (CSF) programme offered farmers in the Otter and Axe catchments free sub-soiling after last year's harvest. Many jumped at the chance to have four acres of compacted land sub-soiled for free, matching that area - and often more - at their own expense.
