THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT THE WORD "PERM" THAT SENDS A SHIVER UP THE SPINE. IT CONJURES UP IMAGES OF POODLES, CHRISTMAS TREES, BRILLO PADS, THE MEN OF "THE BRADY BUNCH." THERE'S SOMETHING SO permanent about the word.

So forgive the ominous music, but... perms are back.

The demand for permanent waves has increased about 20 percent at his namesake salon at 106 E. Oak, says Charles Ifergan. "People are wanting to do something with a little more volume, poufy and fun," he says.

But it's not about '80s whiplash.
