We all live with two kinds of ghosts, personal and historical. My father died a year ago this week. He was 90 and had lived a long, mostly blessed life. After a year without him, I am still getting used to his ghost.

On the eve of the anniversary of his death, I tried to conjure my father, but mostly I found him in what we were both missing. I was missing his corny jokes, and he was missing seeing Tiger Woods sink a putt on the 18th hole to win a golf tournament.
