SOUTHFIELDS, in south-west London, can trace its name back to the 13th century when it first appeared on maps as the south fields in the manor of Dunsford. For six centuries it remained an area of open farmland, until the arrival of the railway in 1889, when it was developed to accommodate the capital's growing commuter population.
