Exhibit showcases steel mills' heyday
|
The drama, and dare we say romance, of Western Pennsylvania's
steel mills has been a draw for artists far and wide for nearly a
century.
In the 1920s and '30s, local artists like Otto Kuhler (1894-
1976) and Aaron Harry Gorson (1872-1933), and even nationally
prominent ones such as Hayley Lever (1876-1958), a hugely
influential instructor at the Art Students League from 1919-31,
painted the mills, rivers, land and soot-filled skies that lay
before them.
Although most of the mills are gone now, a few remain -- and so
do a few artists still drawn to them for the same reasons.
