Brian Hilbish of Bedford was skateboarding long before it was an extreme sport or a multimillion-dollar industry.

"I was chased off of streets and sidewalks in Lynchburg in the '70s," the 49-year-old said.

Hilbish said he wants the skate park to be a place that youth, such as his 14-year-old son Jake, can use without having to congregate on public streets and sidewalks, which can become an issue with police.
