Italian stonemasons put up Empire-style courthouse brick by brick

Staff Writer
WOOSTER -- Thomas Boyd, an architect with a strong regional
reputation, was hired in 1878 to spearhead the new Wayne County
courthouse project, and immediately set to work designing it in the
so-called Second Empire style. Named for the reign of Napoleon III
of France, the elaborate architectural style was the rage in the
United States at the time.
Actually, a close architectural relative of the Wayne County
courthouse would be the Philadelphia City Hall, erected in 1871.
