Britain's 50 best paintings {outside London}

It was announced last week that the art dealer Anthony d'Offay's
collection of contemporary art had been acquired for the nation.
Significantly, the works will not remain in London, waiting for the
country to come to them: instead, the collection will be managed by
both the Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland, and it will
tour
regularly across Britain. While this is wonderful news, it is
worth remembering just how many extraordinary works of art can
already be
found in museums and galleries outside the capital (and outside
