Blackwell's Pounds 5 million gift opens up Bodleian library

THE head of the Blackwell book empire has given Pounds 5 million to Oxford University's New Bodleian Library the biggest cash donation of its kind.

The money from Julian Blackwell, whose great-grandfather founded Blackwell's in 1879, will be used to help open up the treasures of the 400-yearold library to the public.

It also marks the launch of a fundraising campaign to renovate the building and turn it into a research centre.
