In the Catholic Church, an indulgence is a means by which believers reduce the time spent in purgatory as punishment for their sins.

According to church teachings, even after a person's sin has been confessed and forgiven, after death he must still go through purification in purgatory before going to heaven.

And by doing things such as praying, fasting or helping others, the believer can reduce the amount of time to be spent in Purgatory.
