Farmers fear bluetongue on way

Farmers in the region are fearing the worst following the news the livestock virus, bluetongue could be heading this way in March.

Scientists have warned that midges which spread the bluetongue virus will become active next month, and say the West is likely to face outbreaks of the livestock disease in late April.

Bluetongue causes fever, mouth ulcers and can turn an animal's tongue blue. It is dangerous to sheep, cows, goats and deer, although it does not affect humans.
