MAY'S FIELD DAY ST. LOUIS PARENT OF LORD & TAYLOR PAYING $3.24 BIL. Buys 156-year- old retailer, 9 Mervyn's from Target

Marshall Field's and nine Mervyn's stores have been sold for a
handsome $3.24 billion to May Department Stores Co., the St. Louis-
based owner of Lord & Taylor department stores.
Field's parent company, Minneapolis-based Target Corp., had pegged
Field's book value at $1.8 billion when it announced on March 10 that
it was selling the 62-store chain.
Gene Kahn, CEO of May Department Stores, told the Sun-Times late
