Count Basie Orchestra channels the jazz master

When Count Basie passed away in 1984, the members of his band - many of whom had long histories with the celebrated leader, composer and pianist - made the decision to stay together. Initially, Thad Jones, an alum who had gone on to lead one of the most respected large ensembles, The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band, returned from Copenhagen where he had moved, to lead the Basie unit. Jones, however, fell into ill health within a year of taking the reins.
