The Buick Riviera coupe was firmly established as one of the most desirable sporty luxury cars by 1965, after its 1963 introduction as a rival to the four-seat Ford Thunderbird. But Buick knew a redesigned model was needed for 1966 because the public kept demanding revamped cars.

Riviera sales totaled an impressive 40,000 cars in 1963, but sales dipped to 34,586 units in 1965, when the car was essentially unchanged from the original model.
