Director of films including 'Tokyo Olympiad' and 'The Burmese
Harp'
The great Japanese director Kon Ichikawa was a man of wide
culture, who produced many films based on some of the best
contemporary novels in Japan, from Natsume Saseki's Kokoro to Yukio
Mishima's Kinkakuji. Ichikawa's 1959 film of Kagi (The Key), one of
the greatest modern novels of Tanizaki Junichiro, won the Jury Prize
at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.
All of Ichikawa's films are on different registers, so it is
difficult to connect them as the expression of a single direct
