The American Repertory Theatre's search for its next artistic director has hit a roadblock, after weeks of anticipation that a new director would be named soon.

The Harvard University search committee has offered the position to a candidate, but that candidate has turned it down.

In a Wednesday e-mail obtained by the Globe, Harvard University provost Steven Hyman thanked ART colleagues and others for their participation in the search for a new ART artistic director.
