Bring back the spirit of raikes

Since Christmas, some of your readers have written in saying how
much they enjoyed the photos of children performing traditional
Nativity plays.
One reader suggested there was a need for a leader in the church
to encourage children to take on Christian values.
The name of John Wesley was mentioned.
In Gloucester the name of Robert Raikes must be remembered as a
man who despaired when he saw children convicted of crimes and
sometimes even sent to the gallows.
Mr Raikes, whose church was St Mary de Crypt, desperately wanted
to give the children a better life.
