Half of fallow land to be used for cultivation

More than half of Lincolnshire farmland left fallow under set-aside is likely to be used for crops this year.

Farmers looking at their options following the scrapping of set- aside for the 2008 harvest said a fair proportion of land is being brought back into use.

But they said that doesn't mean they don't care about the environment and its wildlife.

Landowners spoke following a Defra monitoring exercise to look at the early impact of the EU's decision to set the set-aside subsidy at zero per cent.
