SHORTLY before eight o'clock tonight Francis Bacon's masterpiece,
Triptych 1974-77, is expected to make history at Christie's saleroom
in St James's. Unofficial estimates suggest the work could fetch
more than Pounds 30 million, shattering previous records for Bacon
and placing him in the highest rank of 20th-century artists
alongside Picasso, Rothko and Warhol.
The prospect has transfixed dealers and collectors. All are eager
