Death of king George vi puts country in mourning

Lincoln was plunged into mourning on February 6, 1952, with the
news that King George VI had died in his sleep.
The sudden loss of the monarch stunned the nation - the King had
retired to rest at Sandringham in his usual health.
George VI had been catapulted on to the throne at the abdication
