Former Chief Justice Sir John Eardley Wilmot, of Osmaston Hall, died 216 years ago today, which prompted Maxwell Craven to look back at his distinguished career.

The loss, 70 years ago, of Osmaston Hall, to make way for the Ascot Drive industrial estate was an unfortunate one.

This is not only because we lost a most impressive house, dating from 1696, but because it was the home of two exceedingly distinguished lawyers and a couple of slightly less distinguished ones.
