Allen Stevens of Wolfeboro likes to tell the story of a 93-year- old sailor who decides on his birthday that he wants to go iceboating one more time.

His family bundles him in winter clothes, blankets and goggles. He lies down on his back in the wooden, coffin-shaped boat.

He sails around the ice, smooth and clear and free of snow. The moment is perfect and fleeting.
