McLean County named for long-forgotten Southern Illinoisan

BLOOMINGTON - Tomorrow will mark the 217th anniversary of the
birth of a long-obscure, white male who happens to be the namesake
of McLean County.
Although all but forgotten today, John McLean played a
significant role in Illinois politics during the first decade after
statehood. He championed slavery, even supporting its spread into
his adopted state, yet remained well-liked among the more forward-
thinking opposition - those who believed the introduction of the
"peculiar institution" into Illinois was morally and
constitutionally untenable.
