Pancake Day - or Shrove Tuesday - happens this year on February 5 and it is the one day of the year when almost everyone eats a pancake. The three days before the beginning of Lent are known as Shrovetide, and it is at the end of this period that Shrove Tuesday occurs, as it is the day when all fats and creams have to be used up before the 40 days of fasting begin.
