Croquet started in mediaeval France as a game called mail
(hammer).
The modern game was formalised in Ireland in the 1830s.
It became popular in England among the aristocracy and upper
middle classes.
Alice In Wonderland features a surreal game using flamingoes as
mallets and hedgehogs as balls.
Harpo Marx was an obsessive croquet player and tried to grass
over the roof of the Algonquin Hotel in new York to lay a lawn for
the game.
