Horsepower ratings are climbing, but not just for high-
performance vehicles. They're also going up for economy cars. Even
Toyota's fuel-stingy Prius hybrid gasoline-electric auto has more
power than last year's model.
There hasn't been such a rapid increase in horsepower since the
late 1950s and 1960s. This time, however, many vehicles with more
power get the same -- and sometimes better -- fuel economy as their
lower-horsepower predecessors.
