Originally, the catechism - a summary of a religion's tenets - was developed in oral form and used as a teaching tool for new believers before they were baptized.

Over time, catechisms started to appear in written form, often in the same question-and-answer format as the early oral catechisms had used.

After the Protestant Reformation many faiths developed their own catechisms, including Anglicans, Presbyterians and Lutherans.
