Clothes make the exhibit at Evanston's Dawes House

A 1950s black wool cocktail dress designed by Christian Dior of Paris is among the treasures displayed in Gems from the Collection, a new exhibit at the Evanston Historical Society's Charles Gates Dawes House.

The Dior dress was commissioned for an Evanston resident by her father.

"Dior was at the height of his fame and success as a premier fashioner designer," said Janet C. Messmer, the Evanston Historical Society costume curator. The original owner still lives in Evanston and she recently "visited" her dress in the exhibit.
