LEARNING FROM A LEGACY ; Students earn scholarships with essays about contribution of Martin Luther King Jr.

Young people played a crucial role in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Students marched, protested at lunch counters, and bore sneers and insults as they desegregated schools.

At a celebration Monday of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 19 New Mexico high school seniors showed the movement King inspired four decades ago remains vivid for many young people today.

Each teenager received a $1,000 scholarship for writing a 500- word essay describing how King's words and example continue to inspire people.
