Dental School Can Be Costly ; Governor Proposes Addition at UNM

Gov. Bill Richardson this week revived a years-old discussion about creating a dental school at the University of New Mexico, but questions remain about how to pay for it.

Past estimates put the price tag on a dental school at $48 million for capital costs and $8 million a year or more in operating expenses, depending on the size of the school.

In his annual state of the state address Tuesday, Richardson told lawmakers he will recommend "the creation of the first dental school in New Mexico to address our state's gaps in oral health care."
