A Mid-Canterbury teenager was sending and reading text messages before his sports utility vehicle crashed into a car, killing two people, a court heard yesterday.

Robert John Stonestreet, 19, of Hinds, pleaded guilty in the Ashburton District Court to causing the death of Beverley Dawn Keating and Samuel Haslett Keating while driving with excess blood- alcohol.
