India's president on Friday dissolved the lower house of
Parliament eight months ahead of schedule, paving the way for an
early national election at a time when a booming economy and
prospects of peace with arch-rival Pakistan bode well for the
country's ruling party.
India's independent election commission will meet next week to set
the dates for the balloting. Leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP) said the election could be held in April or May.
