THE message is still valid after 2,000 years - drink too much and you could look as bad as this.

The face of a wild, violent and drunken nymph is on a Roman lamp which has been bought by the Yorkshire Museum in York.

The copper lamp from the first or second century AD is in the shape of a female head. It is one of only a handful ever discovered in Britain and is in excellent condition.

The head is thought to be of a Maenad - literally translated as raving ones - who in Greek and Roman mythology were portrayed as frenzied, drunken and violent worshippers of Dionysus, the god of mystery, wine, ...
