Good preparation key to replacing paneling

Q. We would like to redo our family room, which has very dark oak paneling, to lighten it up. Besides the dark wood paneling, the room has dark wood trim throughout, a ceiling with dark wood beams and a brick fireplace in three tones of gray.

Our furniture includes a new tan leather sofa, plus a variety of end tables. We are prepared to paint the paneling but wonder if we should fill in the grooves with spackle or if we should just paint over it? Or, should we sand out the dark colorin...
