Fifty years ago, on Oct. 23, 1956, the people of Hungary
spontaneously and at first peacefully - then violently - rose up
against Soviet occupation and the communist dictatorship to demand
basic human rights and sovereignty.
Hungary, a nation of 10 million people, challenged the superpower
Soviet Union, with a population of 200 million. The eruption of the
