It was a bit of a rocky start.

The first time Lorraine "Rainy" Melgosa walked Mike by herself, the 2,300-pound draft horse took off running in circles. Melgosa held on, her feet touching the ground every 10 steps or so, until the Percheron finally came to a stop.

Another morning at a boarding stable near Colorado Springs, someone threw a bale of hay over the fence just as Melgosa was putting Mike's halter on. Mike left Melgosa in his dust.
