U.S. District Judge James H. Alesia was the child of immigrants and always had the needs of ordinary people in mind, whether he was sentencing a corrupt judge during the Greylord scandal or swearing in new citizens.

Although poor health forced him to take senior status in 1998, he continued to be a workhorse and was at his job Thursday, hours before he collapsed on the porch of his Park Ridge home and died. He was 69.

Judge Alesia worked as a policeman while going to law school at night. He was a trial lawyer, a federal prosecutor and an administrative law judge before being appointed to the ...
