The Arkansas River's famed caddis fly hatch is off and bouncing to the beat of a different drummer this year. The insects, which feed trout and draw fly fishers from as far as the East Coast, indeed, are hatching.

But the hatch has gotten off to a goofy start along the 60-mile stretch from Canon City to Salida. Instead of progressing upstream in an orderly wave as nature intended, the celebrated insects have been popping up like silhouette targets in a shooting gallery.
