From the sanctuary of Family Tree, Jefferson County's only battered women's shelter, Windi and Kendra recall how they got there.

Windi, mother of a son and a daughter, has been attempting to escape a man who she thought was an ideal companion. The man physically abused Windi and her son, she said.

Windi and the kids have been on the run since, but "every time we get settled in, he finds us and leaves a sign to show that he did."
