Hyde Park protects exotic 'Harold's parakeets'

To bird-watchers, the bright green birds with gray monastic-like hoods are Myiopsitta monachus, or monk parakeets. But in Hyde Park, where the Argentine natives have made their home for more than 20 years, they go by their Chicago name--Harold's parakeets.

Harold Washington--who won the first of two terms as mayor in 1983, about three years after the birds made their home across from his Hyde Park condominium building--considered the birds to be good- luck omens.
