A fast-spreading, water-gulping invasive tree is under attack from
Gov. Bill Owens, who wants the culprit eradicated from the state
within a decade.
Known as tamarisk, or saltcedar, it's considered the most
destructive plant in the American Southwest and has long been the
target of landowners, public land management agencies and wildlife
advocates. Now, with the drought straining water supplies, Owens and
other western politicians are out to get the moisture-greedy plant.
