One measure of historical writing is how relevant it remains decades after being published.

I have admired Columbia University historian Richard Hofstadter ever since my 11th-grade history teacher Charles Evans Hughes had us read his classic, "The American Political Tradition." That was back in 1960.

As an undergraduate, I read "Social Darwinism in American Thought," "The Age of Reform," and "Anti-Intellectualism in American Life."

I never read "The Paranoid Style in American Politics and Other Essays" until I picked it up at the Marshall University bookstore earlier ...
