Sonic booms stand in way of supersonic business jets

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Standing beneath the clear blue skies of a
California desert, NASA Langley Research Center engineer Peter Coen
watches the contrails of two jets stream overhead and counts the
seconds before hearing two thuds. He has an ear for the sound planes
make when they break the sound barrier.
Sixteen seconds pass.
Boom. BOOM!
Thirty more seconds.
BOOM! BOOM!
The first boom was the quietest, and it was music to Coen's ears.
